Dissemination and Implementation Science (DIS) Research
What is Dissemination and Implementation Science?
Dissemination is the process of spreading of evidence-based intervention information to a targeted public health or clinical practice audience. This can be done through presentations, publications, manuals and websites.
Implementation scienceis the study of methods that influence the integration of evidence-based interventions into clinical and community settings in order to improve patient outcomes and benefit population health.
Why is the study of dissemination and implementation important?
- It bridges the gap between clinical research, everyday practice, and public health by building a knowledge on how health interventions are translated for public health and health care service use in specific settings.
- Translating research into practice takes a long time thus DIS ensures that evidence-based interventions are offered to their target population without significant delays.
- DIS informs the design of evidence-based interventions that improve the health outcomes in the real-world
- It provides a variety of approaches that have demonstrated evidence of improving health outcome to targeted audiences.
PETRA DIS activities
PETRA will play an important role in producing a cadre of health professionals with the skills and competence in DIS. Training in DIS will be done through;
- introducing DIS sessions at the currently implemented research methods courses within the PETRA institutions
- developing a special track for interested and promising faculty members to undergo a training-of -trainers (TOT) program facilitated by University of Colorado Denver (UCD) DIS experts
- Implementing Interdisciplinary DIS Mentored Research Projects i.e Mentored Research Scholars Program (MRSP), with emphasis on DIS and HIV/AIDS research questions.
PETRA DIS immediate plans
- DIS Champions to undergo certified online courses on DIS
- Support DIS Champions to apply for DIS research funding
- Conduct Research Methodology workshops with DIS concepts
- Conduct a DIS Proposal Writing workshop for potential DIS Multidisciplinary Mentored Research Scholars (MRSP)
- Recruitment of DIS MRSP
- Support DIS MRSP to conduct their research projects
